One of a group of negatives taken for February 27, 1959, Arkansas Gazette article "Pear Trees to Adorn Arkansas City," B1:3 and for November 22, 1960, Arkansas Gazette article "Historic River Port is Making a Comeback," B1:2. The Desha County Courthouse is located in Arkansas City, Arkansas (1655.03, 1655.07, 1655.08, 1655.12). Desha County Judge J.L. Erwin and Verna Reilzammer, postmaster at Arkansas City, Desha County, Arkansas, inspect one of many pear trees planted around the courthouse grounds (1655.12). As part of a beautification project, 1,001 pear trees were planted on the grounds and for a five-mile stretch along Arkansas State Highway 4. The United States Post Office, one of many buildings located on Main Street, faces the Desha County Courthouse (1655.01, 1655.02, 1655.04, 1655.06, 1655.09). The Arkansas City Museum has a large turning piece of metal machinery and a gas lamp displayed in the front yard. Items of historic importance are displayed inside. Judge J.L. Erwin stands in front of some farm machinery (1655.11). Before becoming the Desha County Judge in 1947, J.L. (Judson Landers) Erwin, Jr. was a lawyer then a State Representative for Desha County from 1939-1946. Ma's Lunch Room.
